Work kept me at the office late, and though I heard about the continuing deterioration of the situation in New Orleans...prior to watching the news, I had only a few news stories online checked out during coffee breaks...
And this is one case where broadcast news (which I normally hate) did so much more justice to the scope and human cost of the devestation... It is so much worse than I thought. Words, including these words, can't carry the weight of what is going on there... The thousands of desperate, hungry, angry people amidst all the flooding, chaos, violence and bodies. News crews themselves aren't filming in town as it isn't safe enough. Many or most of the effected appear to be the poor or elderly who could not afford to evacuate.
At one point in I think it was NBC's coverage they show a single dazed looking man with a crowd of what looked like five children around him, all of them lethargic and deathly looking. All waiting and waiting for food or water. Earlier, while trapped on rooftops there was only a single boat, and all of the mothers chose to stay behind, ensuring that their children and this one guardian would have room in the only boat.
At the time of the live report there was no sign that any of the women made it out.
- Is there anyone from Tribe who know family or friends effected?
- Any good ideas on ways to be of any practical help?
My best idea so far has been cash.
Given here.
- Tim
Thanks, I'm going to have nightmares tonight.
